The resignation of longtime West Valley Congressman Trent Franks earlier this year has triggered a special election. Former Republican state Senator Debbie Lesko and Democratic newcomer Dr. Hiral Tipirneni who won their respective primaries in February are now facing off in the general election. Though the congressional district is a Republican stronghold, this year it is unexpectedly competitive for many reasons including a possible Democratic wave. Last Sunday, the candidates debated issues ranging from immigration to healthcare on 12 News’ Sunday Square Off.
