This week the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee held another series of hearings examining the 340B drug savings program. During the hearing a number of senators spoke about repeated delays in implementing a final rule on 340B drug ceiling prices and civil monetary penalties for manufacturers. The rulemaking on this issue began seven years ago, and last week HRSA proposed delaying the effective date to July 1, 2019.

Medication Assisted Treatment Training for Opioid Use Disorders by Joe Furia

The University of Arizona Center for Rural Health will be offering Medication Assisted Treatment of Opioid Use Disorders on Saturday, July 28th in Flagstaff. This training  will address the combination of medications that targets the brain and psychosocial interventions aimed at improving treatment outcomes. Research shows that medications and therapy together may be more successful than either treatment method alone. MDs, DOs, NPs, PAs and other clinical professional statewide are welcome to attend. AzHHA Releases Hospital Financial Reports for March 2018 by Joe Furia

The most recent hospital financial reports show improved financial results for the twelve months ended March 2018. For the most recent twelve months operating margins were 5.5 percent, while last year they were slightly over 3 percent. These reports also show a dramatic reduction in uncompensated care since the restoration of the prop. 204 population and Medicaid expansion took place on January 1, 2014.  For the twelve month period ending March 31, 2014 the uncompensated care hospitals incurred was just under 8 percent, while for the most recent 12 months it had declined to 2.5 percent. The total AHCCCS population has decreased by 4 percent since May 2017, and the childless adult population, partially financed by the hospital assessment, has declined steadily over the last 7 months.
