  • Arizona Students to Receive National HOSA Scholarship and Sing National Anthem

Centennial High School 2007 graduate Rachael Mayer is the first Arizonan to be awarded a National Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Scholarship. Arizona’s HOSA—established in 2005 as one of the most recent state charters in the national organization—was founded by the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association (AzHHA) and launched with a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

“It’s rare for the member of a young state association to receive such a prestigious award,” said Jane Shovlin, Arizona HOSA State Advisor. “This demonstrates the caliber of the students Arizona’s HOSA program is attracting and bodes well for our future healthcare providers.”

Mayer will receive a $1,000 Phillip R. Patton/HCA Scholarship. She will be honored at a banquet at the 2007 National HOSA Conference in Orlando, Florida this week.

“Rachael is an incredible student,” said Micki Hurley, Arizona HOSA State Advisor and Centennial High School teacher. “She excels at everything she is involved in.”

Mayer plans to attend Northern Arizona University (NAU) in the fall to pursue a career as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner.

Kingman High School North student Erin Reiman was selected to sing the national anthem during the opening reception. These two students will be joined by an Arizona delegation of more than 130 Arizona high school students and advisors at the HOSA convention.

HOSA is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education Division of ACTE. HOSA’s two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry and to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare to all people.

Arizona HOSA has 1,400 members statewide and 88 chapters. Arizona HOSA was recognized by National HOSA in 2006 as the one of the fastest growing state charters in the nation.
