Simulation scenarios:

  • Postpartum hypertension/Eclampsia - high fidelity scenario modeled after Laerdal's Accelerate program using MamaAnne or SimMom.
    • Learning objectives:
      • Identify the warning signs and symptoms of eclampsia
      • Initiate immediate emergency management of an eclamptic seizure
      • Demonstrate the proper administration of magnesium sulfate as first-line treatment for eclampsia
      • Recognize and manage complications of eclampsia
      • Initiate fetal monitoring and evaluate fetal well-being
      • Understand the indications for delivery in patients with eclampsia
      • Participate in post-simulation debriefing to reflect on team performance, communication and areas for improvement
  • Postpartum hemorrhage - low fidelity simulation using MamaNatalie.
    • Learning objectives:
      • Understand the importance of completing a hemorrhage risk assessment
      • Recognize common causes of postpartum hemorrhage
      • Overview of the importance of quantified blood loss (QBL) and proper measuring techniques
      • Identify key components and steps involved in managing hemorrhage including stage-based care
      • Respectful and equitable care – importance of supporting patient and family during and after traumatic event
      • Participate in post-simulation debriefing to reflect on team performance, communication and areas for improvement
  • OB code - high fidelity simulation using a MamaBirthie and a QCPR simulator.
    • Learning objectives:
      • Recognize maternal cardiac arrest
      • Identify maternal code protocol to include describing the role and responsibilities of each team member in a maternal code situation
      • Ensure timely activation of the maternal code team and necessary resources
      • Apply ACLS algorithms with consideration of physiological changes during pregnancy
      • Perform emergency perimortem cesarean delivery
      • Demonstrate clear, concise communication during maternal code situations, utilizing closed-loop communication techniques
      • Participate in post-simulation debriefing to reflect on team performance, communication and areas for improvement
