This week more than 200 healthcare leaders from across the state join AzHHA in Tucson for the 2024 Arizona Hospital Leadership Conference.

Why it matters: This year’s theme is “Leading through disruption and change” and explores important topics such as:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Cybersecurity lessons learned
  • The 2024 election and its consequences
  • The importance of vulnerability in leadership roles

AzHHA announces new slate for 2025 Board of Directors

What’s new: The AzHHA Board of Directors announced today that it approved new healthcare executives to serve on its board and confirmed its roster for 2025.

The following Arizona healthcare executives were approved to join the Board:

  • Vicki Began, CEO, San Carlos Apache Healthcare Corporation
  • Erica Brown, executive director, Creighton University, Arizona Health Education Alliance
  • Jeff Comer, CEO, Summit Healthcare
  • Chris Ruble, CEO, Quail Run Behavioral Health
  • Dawn Tschabrun, CEO, Select Specialty Hospital – Tucson East

The Legislator of the Year Award goes to…

Senator David Gowan (R-Dist. 19) was presented the 2024 Legislator of the Year Award.

👉This award honors the steadfast commitment of a public servant who has gone above and beyond in championing the needs of Arizona’s hospitals.

“Senator Gowan has demonstrated exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to healthcare in his district and throughout the state. He is not just a policymaker; he is a bridge-builder and a dealmaker who works across the aisle always keeping his constituents and Arizona hospitals at the forefront of his efforts.”

Grassroots Champion Award is presented to…

🏆Danny Smith, Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center’s director of marketing and community relations and executive director of the Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center Foundation Board, was presented with the 2024 Grassroots Champion Award.

Why it matters: The award honors a hospital leader from an American Hospital Association (AHA) member organization in each state who excels at building strong relationships with lawmakers and their staff and works tirelessly to advocate for the well-being of patients, hospitals and the communities they serve.

“Danny is an exceptional honoree who is a true champion for rural Arizona healthcare. He brought hope and progress to our healthcare community, from garnishing support from rural business communities to advocating for hospitals with elected officials.”

AzHHA Quality Awards - Top Overall Excellence winner

Quality Awards

🎉Phoenix VA Health Care System received the Top Overall Excellence Award as part of this year’s AzHHA Quality Awards for their submission titled “Journey to ZERO (Harm) — a Fall Reduction Project.”

The submission detailed a fall reduction initiative aimed at cutting the fall rate in acute care services by 50%. The project emphasized continuous feedback, psychological safety and performance improvement, resulting in significant progress in fall prevention metrics.

Why it matters: This award recognizes the highest achievement among the top scores from each category of the AzHHA Quality Awards.

  • These applications were blinded and went to volunteers from other state hospital associations to be scored. The winner was the highest of the three.

AzHHA Quality Awards - Community Engagement winners

🤼There was a tie for the top score in the general acute care category for the Community Engagement Award! The winners are:

  • Valleywise Health for their submission titled “Bicycle Helmet Screening and Distribution in the Emergency Department – An Injury Prevention Program to engage the community during Emergency Department visits.”
  • Onvida Health (formerly Yuma Regional Medical Center) for their submission titled “Enhancing Diabetes Self-management for Underinsured Low-income Individuals with Diabetes.”

AzHHA Quality Awards - Patient Safety and Quality winners

🏥The winners of the Patient Safety and Quality Award are:

  • Top critical access hospital/rural hospital (less than or equal to 100 beds): Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Southeast Arizona for their submission titled “Zero Harm: Our High-Reliability Journey.”
  • Top general acute care (greater or equal to 101 beds): Valleywise Health for their submission titled “Target 1% - Blood Culture Contamination Rate Process Improvement.”
  • Top federal hospital: Phoenix VA Health Care System for their submission titled “Journey to ZERO (Harm) — a Fall Reduction Project.”

Why it matters: This award celebrates healthcare facilities in Arizona for their outstanding achievements in enhancing clinical quality and patient care.

AzHHA Quality Awards - Maternal Health Innovation winners

🤰The winners of the Maternal Health Innovation Award are:

  • Top critical access hospital/rural hospital (less than or equal to 100 beds): Canyon Vista Medical Center for their submission titled “OB Hemorrhage Improvement.”
  • Top general acute care (greater or equal to 101 beds): Summit Healthcare for their submission titled “Alliance Supporting Parents in Recovery (ASPIRe).”
  • Top federal hospital: Southern Arizona VA Health Care System for their submission titled “Commitment to High Reliability: An Organizational Approach to Improving Care for our Women Veterans.”

Why it matters: This award honors healthcare facilities for their outstanding efforts in enhancing maternal health outcomes.
