2024 election: What we know so far

Illustration of a hand pulling a window shade down over the state of Arizona.

The 2024 election results in Arizona initially seemed like a roller coaster ride. Still, as more ballots were counted, they revealed a steady trend toward a Republican majority in the Arizona House and Senate. Although the results are yet to be certified, we’d like to recap what we know.

At the federal level, the Associated Press declared Ruben Gallego (D) the winner of the Senate race against Kari Lake (R). Meanwhile, Republicans have maintained a majority in Arizona’s nine congressional districts, holding a 6-3 split.

In the Arizona legislature, the Republican Party will continue its majority in both chambers, gaining an additional seat in the Senate (17-13) and a few more in the House (33-27).

Yesterday, leadership positions were announced in both chambers. Below, you’ll find a breakdown of the new leadership teams in the Arizona House and Senate.

House Majority Leadership

  • Representative Steve Montenegro (R-Dist. 29) will be Speaker of the House.
  • Representative Michael Carbone (R-Dist. 25) will be Majority Leader.
  • Representative Julie Willoughby (R-Dist. 13) will be Majority Whip.

House Minority Leadership

  • Representative Oscar De Los Santos (D-Dist. 11) will be the House Minority Leader.
  • Representative Nancy Gutierrez (D-Dist. 18) will be the House Assistant Minority Leader.
  • Representative Quanta Crews (D-Dist. 26) will be House Minority Co-Whip.
  • Representative Stacey Travers (D-Dist. 12) will be House Minority Co-Whip.

Senate Majority Leadership Team

  • Senator Warren Petersen (R-Dist. 14) will remain Senate President.
  • Senator Janae Shamp (R-Dist. 29) will be the Senate Majority Leader.
  • Senator Frank Carroll (R-Dist. 28) will be the Senate Majority Whip.

Senate Minority Leadership Team

  • Senator Priya Sundareshan (D-Dist. 18) will be Senate Minority Leader.
  • Senator Flavio Bravo (D-Dist. 26) will be Senate Assistant Minority Leader.
  • Senator Rosanna Gabaldon (D-Dist. 21) will be the Senate Minority Whip.
  • Senator Lela Alston (D-Dist. 5) will be the Senate Minority Caucus Chair.
