How to Get Involved
In politics, they say if you aren’t at the table, you’re on the menu. This is especially true in healthcare, where federal and state governments are both payers and regulators. Add to this the many competing healthcare interests who may have a very different vision of how your hospital should operate, and it becomes crystal clear:
- When it comes to overcoming threats and taking advantage of opportunities, it is vital for your organization to have a strong strategy in place for legislative and grassroots activity, as well as policy development.
Whether you’re the largest healthcare organization or the smallest, AzHHA’s policy and advocacy team helps safeguard your interests and pursue your initiatives in order to improve patient care and the health of the community.

Take advantage of group influence
AzHHA maintains a well-connected network of government relations professionals capable of meeting with legislators and regulators on most, if not all, healthcare issues. AzHHA’s advocacy efforts utilize a wide range of political engagement strategies such as:
- Mobilizing grassroots activists.
- Evaluating political candidates and proposed legislation.
- Investing in those with a track record of support or those with the promise of becoming a supporter.
AzHHA should be an important part of your policy and advocacy efforts. For more information, please contact Damien Johnson, director of government relations.
Tell your hospital story
As we work to educate our legislators and the public, it’s important to provide concrete examples of what our hospital members are doing to help build better health and healthcare in our communities. We need your help telling these stories in three key areas:
- How your hospital delivers high-quality care to your patients and community.
- What your hospital does to serve as a valuable member of your community such as providing a meeting place for community groups, serving as a large community employer, etc.
- Ways your organization invests in the community outside the hospital’s walls such as injury prevention programs, community outreach programs, etc.
If you are a member and interested in sharing your story, please reach out to Helena Whitney, SVP, policy and advocacy.
The power in the collective
Our collective voices make a difference at the state capitol as we weigh-in on healthcare policies that can help or harm our communities. By offering testimony at the legislature, you provide a unique viewpoint of what are members are experiencing first-hand. If you are interested in speaking at the state capitol, please contact Helena Whitney, SVP, policy and advocacy.
Join our weekly member call
During the legislative session, AzHHA hosts weekly member calls each Friday that are 15 to 30 minutes in length. These calls:
- Keep you informed on key bills.
- Provide you with the latest updates from legislators and the Governor’s staff.
- Offer you an opportunity to express your feedback on specific legislation.
To add yourself, or a designee or member(s) of your staff to the invitation list, please email [email protected] with the name, title and email address of who should be added.
