Arizona Transition to Practice Program for New Graduate Registered Nurses
Preceptors are experienced licensed registered nurses who are paired with a new graduate nurse to provide support during clinical orientation and onboarding to the unit. They also need training and resources to be able to support new graduates during that first year of practice. The Arizona Transition to Practice Program Preceptor Academy provides the education and training needed to function in the role of a preceptor.
Preceptor role
A preceptor serves as a coach, evaluator, advocate, role model, socializer and motivator to the new graduate nurse. They are the new graduate’s resource at the point of care. Preceptors are fundamental in bridging the gap between academia and clinical practice for new graduates. They also contribute towards the retention and sustainability of new graduates in the workforce.
Preceptor Academy structure
Each preceptor is paired with one new graduate nurse at a time. Preceptor-related education and preparation will not exceed four hours in a work week.
The Preceptor Academy consists of:
- Platform training.
- Preceptor role-based training.
- Nursing Professional Development board certification preparation courses.
- Monthly town halls.

*Preceptors are eligible to take the Nursing Professional Development board certification course upon completion of the academy.
